Bengal is India’s deepest well of creative energy. It has a flourishing artistic and literary culture. Artists here live in the inspiring shadows of greats, such as Rabindranath Tagore and Satyajit Ray.

No evening in Bengal now passes without the performance of Rabindra Sangeet, the poetry and songs of Rabindranath Tagore, somewhere or other.

There are plenty of auditoriums all over the state and mainly in the capital city, Calcutta, which have regular performances of music, dance and theater - the most Bengali of the performing arts. Bengali dance, theater and other stage performances are always held at Kalamandir, Rabindra Sadan, and Academy of Fine Arts Auditorium in Calcutta.

Jamini Roy, the grand old man of Bengali painting, was well renowned for his fine and delicate linear paintings.The capital of West Bengal, Calcutta, is a city with a soul, and its residents and many visitors are inordinately fond of it. Calcutta which has long been acknowledged as the cultural capital of India, is a lively city where something is always happening, be it religious celebrations, concerts, cricket matches, theatre or movie festivals, or political demonstrations: and although decaying, the architectural heritage is still there.
